What I've Learned about Action Research

Action research is a process an educational leader uses to seek out change on his or her campus. This is done by inquiring about a change that needs to occur then reflecting or wondering using a questioning technique. Data is then collected to help visualize the posed question. The data is then analyzed along with reading related literature which result in making changes and sharing this information with others on campus. Benefits of administrative inquiry is that it gives a principal a significant resource to improve and make positive changes on his or her campus. Also, principals become role models for teachers and students on campus by becoming the chief learner on campus. Action research starts by defining a problem or issue to study, review professional literature, take action and finally, use and share the results to improve student learning. Action research is a form of learning that creates opportunities to create a deep understanding of why students behave as they do and and gives teachers the ability to research practices that individualize instruction for students to increase achievement. Action research increases professional development opportunities for administrators and teachers alike. It also gives administrators and teachers occasions to communicate with peers on a professional level and share their learning with each other. Action research benefits administrators, teachers, students and parents.
